We Help Keep Feet Healthy
Welcome to The Foot Health Centre, where we focus on the comprehensive care of foot-related ailments, including heel pain. Heel pain is a common issue that can greatly impact daily activities and overall quality of life. In this guide, we’ll explore various types of heel pain and how our experienced Chiropodists can help you find relief.
Heel pain is one of the most common foot conditions, affecting people of all ages and activity levels. The discomfort can range from a mild, persistent ache to intense, stabbing pain, often impacting daily activities like walking, exercising, or standing for prolonged periods. The most common causes of heel pain include plantar fasciitis, a condition where the ligament connecting the heel to the toes becomes inflamed; heel spurs, which are bony growths that can press against soft tissues in the foot; and Achilles tendinitis, an inflammation of the Achilles tendon due to overuse or strain.
Whether your heel pain is mild or severe, recent or chronic, we’re here to help you regain your mobility and get back to the activities you love. Our experienced team is dedicated to helping you lead a pain-free, active life, so you can feel confident on your feet again.
What to Expect
Heel pain can manifest in different ways and may stem from various underlying causes. Some common types of heel pain include:
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is one of the most prevalent causes of heel pain. It occurs when the plantar fascia, a band of tissue connecting the heel bone to the toes, becomes inflamed or irritated. This often results in sharp pain in the heel, especially with the first steps in the morning or after prolonged periods of rest.
Heel Spurs
Heel spurs are bony growths that develop on the underside of the heel bone. While not always painful on their own, heel spurs can cause discomfort and inflammation if they press against surrounding tissues or nerves.
Achilles Tendonitis
Achilles tendinitis is characterized by inflammation of the Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. This condition typically causes pain at the back of the heel and may worsen during physical activity.
Other Causes
Heel pain can also result from other factors such as stress fractures, bursitis, arthritis, or wearing improper footwear.
Common Treatments
Custom Orthotics
Custom-made orthotic devices are designed to provide support and proper alignment for the feet, helping to reduce strain on the heels and alleviate pain.
Exercises
Specific stretching exercises targeting the calves, Achilles tendon, and plantar fascia can help improve flexibility and reduce tension in the affected area.
Footwear Recommendations
Our Chiropodists can provide guidance on selecting appropriate footwear with adequate support and cushioning to alleviate heel pain and prevent further aggravation.
Physical Therapy
In some cases, physical therapy techniques such as ultrasound therapy, massage, and exercises may be recommended to promote healing and improve mobility.
Injections
For severe cases of heel pain, corticosteroid injections may be administered to reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief.
Shockwave Therapy
Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses acoustic waves to stimulate tissue repair, improve blood flow, and alleviate pain. Whether you’re dealing with chronic heel pain, tendonitis, or inflammation, Shockwave Therapy offers an evidence-based solution.
