We Help Keep Feet Healthy

Welcome to The Foot Health Centre, where we focus on providing expert care for various foot conditions, including ingrown toenails. Ingrown toenails can be painful and impact daily activities, but with proper treatment, they can be effectively managed. In this guide, we’ll explore what ingrown toenails are, what causes them, and how our experienced Chiropodists can help treat and prevent them.

Ingrown toenails occur when the edge of the nail grows into the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and sometimes infection. Commonly affecting the big toe, ingrown toenails can be caused by improper nail trimming, tight shoes, or injury. At The Foot Health Centre, we provide gentle, effective treatment options to relieve discomfort, promote healing, and prevent recurrence, helping you walk comfortably again.

What Causes Ingrown Toenails?

Several factors can contribute to the development of ingrown toenails, including:

Improper Nail Trimming

Cutting toenails too short or too far down the edges can increase the likelihood of the nail growing into the skin.

Poorly Fitted Footwear

Shoes that are too tight or narrow can exert pressure on the toes, pushing the nail into the surrounding skin.

Trauma

Stubbing the toe or dropping heavy objects on the foot can cause injury to the nail, leading to ingrown toenails.

Genetics

Some individuals may inherit a tendency to develop ingrown toenails due to the shape or structure of their nails.

Common Treatments

Nail Trimming

Our Chiropodists can safely trim the ingrown portion of the toenail to relieve pressure and reduce discomfort. Proper nail trimming techniques will be recommended to prevent recurrence.

Surgical Intervention

For persistent or severe cases of ingrown toenails, a partial nail avulsion procedure may be performed under local anesthesia. This involves removing a portion of the toenail and prevention of regrowth of the nail root, to allow for proper healing.

Antibiotics

If an ingrown toenail becomes infected, antibiotics may be prescribed to treat the infection and prevent complications.

Footwear Recommendations

Our Chiropodists can offer guidance on selecting appropriate footwear with proper fit to minimize friction and pressure on vulnerable areas of the feet.

Orthotic Devices

Custom orthotic devices can help alleviate pressure on the toes and promote proper nail growth, reducing the risk of ingrown toenails.

Foot Soaks

Warm foot soaks can help reduce inflammation and soften the skin around the ingrown toenail, making it easier to trim or lift the nail.
