Your Specialists in Foot Health
Chiropodists and podiatrists are the only recognized and regulated foot specialists in Ontario.
The titles of chiropodist (pronounced : ˜ker-ro-po-dist) and podiatrist often cause confusion. In Ontario, these terms are used interchangeably to refer to “the treatment of the feet and their ailments,” which includes the prevention and treatment of foot diseases or disorders through therapeutic or orthotic methods. Both professions require extensive training, requiring seven to eight years of post-secondary education, and are the only regulated foot specialists trained exclusively in assessing and treating foot disorders. Some podiatrists also have the training to perform surgeries on the bones of the forefoot.
No new podiatry licenses are being issued in Ontario. Podiatrists currently practicing in the province were trained in the United States and having been practicing here since before 1993 and have an expanded scope of practice. In that year, the Ontario government stopped issuing podiatry licenses and began issuing chiropody licenses instead. Therefore, anyone studying podiatry in the USA (or anywhere else in the world) and moving to Ontario after 1993 will be licensed as a chiropodist. The College of Chiropodists of Ontario regulates both chiropodists and podiatrists.
Additionally, they are the only regulated health professionals in Ontario whose legislated scope of practice includes providing orthotics.
Did you know that Ontario is the only jurisdiction in the world still using the title “Chiropodist”? All other areas – regardless of where the practitioner received their education – have changed to the title “Podiatrist”.
