If you’ve been researching custom orthotics, you’ve probably come across clinics promoting pressure mapping for orthotics or computerized foot scans. These systems may look advanced, offering colourful images of pressure points and gait patterns, but are they really necessary for prescribing effective orthotics?
At The Foot Health Centre, our chiropodists use advanced technology in many areas of our practice, but we intentionally do not rely on pressure mapping for orthotics. Here’s why — and why most regulated foot specialists choose not to use these systems for orthotic assessments.
What Is Pressure Mapping for Orthotics?
Pressure mapping systems, often called computerized gait analysis or foot scanning devices, are used in some clinics to measure how pressure is distributed across the feet while standing or walking. Some clinics use these colourful pressure images to recommend orthotics.
While this technology can provide a visual demonstration, it has significant limitations when it comes to accurately diagnosing foot issues and creating properly prescribed custom orthotics.
Why We Choose Not to Rely on Pressure Mapping for Orthotics
Some regulated clinics use pressure mapping for orthotics as a visual educational tool to show patients areas of high or low pressure. However, regulated foot specialists – chiropodists and podiatrists – should never rely on these systems to guide treatment decisions or to manufacture custom orthotics.
In fact, under Standards of Practice for registrants of the College of Chiropodists of Ontario, it is not permitted to use pressure mapping systems to create an image of the foot for the purpose of orthotic manufacturing.
At The Foot Health Centre, we rely on nearly 30 years of clinical expertise and hands-on biomechanical assessment — not computer-generated images — to design effective, personalized orthotic solutions.
We Are Not Against Technology — We Use It Where It Truly Benefits You
It’s important to note that we are not against technology. We use advanced tools in many areas of our practice where they provide real, measurable benefits for our patients.
If we believed pressure mapping for orthotics would enhance patient care, we would absolutely incorporate it. However, based on current research and clinical best practices, this technology does not provide the dynamic, detailed information required for accurate orthotic prescription.
Limitations of Pressure Mapping for Orthotics
Pressure mapping for orthotics may look impressive, but it comes with serious clinical limitations:
Limited to Vertical Forces
These devices only measure downward pressure and cannot capture shear forces — which are critical for understanding true foot function and injury risks.
Static Snapshots Only
Many pressure mapping systems capture only a static image or a brief snapshot of pressure distribution, which does not reflect how your foot moves throughout your natural gait.
Potential for Misinterpretation
Pressure patterns alone can be misleading. A specific pressure reading doesn’t always correspond to a specific movement issue or foot condition.
Incomplete Assessment
Pressure mapping cannot evaluate joint mobility, muscle strength, structural alignment, or footwear — all essential components of an accurate orthotic prescription.
Primarily Used as Sales Tools
In many non-regulated settings, pressure mapping for orthotics is used more as a sales tool to sell generic, off-the-shelf orthotics, rather than to guide truly custom medical treatment.
Why Hands-On Assessment Still Matters
Our chiropodists each bring nearly 30 years of clinical experience with a special focus on biomechanics and orthotic therapy. We are fully trained to assess your feet without relying on pressure mapping for orthotics, using:
-
Detailed biomechanical evaluations
-
Joint mobility and alignment assessments
-
Muscle strength and balance testing
-
Gait analysis (observing how you walk in real time)
-
Footwear evaluation
-
A complete review of your symptoms and lifestyle needs
This comprehensive, patient-focused approach allows us to create custom orthotics that truly support your foot health, comfort, and mobility.
The Bottom Line: Pressure Mapping for Orthotics Is Not Enough
While pressure mapping for orthotics may look impressive, it cannot replace skilled clinical judgment, hands-on assessment, and decades of biomechanical expertise.
At The Foot Health Centre, we continue to use technology where it adds real value — but we will never substitute a computer image for the quality, accuracy, and individualized care our patients deserve.
If you’re considering orthotics or have questions about your foot health, we’d love to walk you through our process.
